The flag of Yemen consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width in red, white, and black. Each color has its own significance rooted in both Yemen’s history and broader Arab symbolism.

Flag History

  1. Pre-Unification (North Yemen):
  • North Yemen (Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen): Used a plain red flag from 1918 until the 1962 revolution.
  • North Yemen (Yemen Arab Republic): Adopted a flag in 1962 with horizontal stripes of red, white, and black, similar to the current flag but with a green star in the center.
  1. Pre-Unification (South Yemen):
  • South Yemen (People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen): Used a flag with horizontal stripes of red, white, and black, similar to the North Yemen flag but with a blue triangle and a red star at the hoist.
  1. Unification (1990):
  • On May 22, 1990, North and South Yemen unified to form the Republic of Yemen. The current flag, which omits any emblems and uses the plain tricolor design, was adopted to symbolize this unity.

Colors and Their Meanings

  • Red: Represents the bloodshed and sacrifices made in the struggle for independence and unity, and the broader struggle against tyranny and oppression.
  • White: Symbolizes hope for a bright future, peace, and the struggle to achieve goals.
  • Black: Stands for the dark past, including periods of occupation and oppression.

The design and colors of Yemen’s flag are inspired by the Pan-Arab colors, which are used by several other Arab countries and symbolize Arab unity and independence.
