History of the Honduras Flag

The flag of Honduras was adopted on March 7, 1866. The design is inspired by the flag of the Federal Republic of Central America, which Honduras was part of from 1823 to 1838. The flag features three horizontal stripes: two outer blue stripes and a central white stripe. In the center of the white stripe are five blue stars arranged in an “X” pattern.

Colors and Their Meanings

  1. Blue Stripes:
  • The two outer blue stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea that border Honduras.
  • They also symbolize the brotherhood and solidarity of the Honduran people with the rest of Central America.
  1. White Stripe:
  • The white stripe in the center stands for peace, purity, and the prosperity of the land.
  • It signifies the hope and aspirations of the Honduran people for a better future.
  1. Five Blue Stars:
  • The five stars arranged in an “X” pattern in the center represent the five original member states of the United Provinces of Central America: Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.
  • They symbolize the ideal of Central American unity and the hope for the future re-unification of these nations.

The flag of Honduras embodies the country’s history, geography, and aspirations, reflecting its identity as part of the Central American region and its hopes for unity and peace.
