The flag of Ghana was designed by Theodosia Okoh and was adopted on March 6, 1957, when Ghana gained independence from the United Kingdom. The design was inspired by the Ethiopian flag, reflecting the Pan-African movement that was prominent at the time. It was the first African flag after the flag of Ethiopia to feature the colors red, yellow, and green.
From 1964 to 1966, the flag featured a white stripe instead of the yellow one, but the original design was reinstated after the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, in 1966.
The flag’s design and colors hold significant meaning and are a source of pride for the Ghanaian people, symbolizing their resilience, wealth, and hope for unity and freedom.
