History of the Flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has had several flags since gaining independence from Belgium in 1960. Here’s a brief overview of its flag history:

1. 1960-1963: The first flag after independence featured a sky blue field with a yellow star in the canton.
2. 1963-1971: This flag was similar but included six smaller yellow stars arranged in a circle around a larger yellow star in the canton.
3. 1971-1997: Under President Mobutu Sese Seko, the country was renamed Zaire, and the flag was changed to a green field with a yellow circle containing an arm holding a torch.
4. 1997-2006: After Mobutu was overthrown, the country reverted to its original name, and a new flag was introduced. This flag had a sky blue field with a large yellow star in the center and six smaller yellow stars arranged vertically along the hoist side.
5. 2006-present: The current flag was adopted in 2006. It has a sky blue field with a yellow star in the upper left corner and a diagonal red stripe with a thin yellow border running from the lower hoist-side corner to the upper fly-side corner.
