The month of September has two birth flowers. The primary birth flower is the aster, and the secondary flower is the morning glory.

September birth flower –  Aster

Aster, scientifically known as Aster amellus, is a daisy-like flower. These tiny blossoms resemble daisies in that they have tall, thin petals with a distinctive yellow center.

Originating from North America, Asia, Europe, and Canada, asters are currently found in about 180 species that are blooming worldwide.

The Gods of Greece and Rome cherished them as sacred flowers. According to Greek mythology, the aster originated from the tears shed by the Goddess Astraea.

Asters are a sign of faith, love, strength, and wisdom. The aster, formerly a symbol of revolution, is now frequently used to honor fallen soldiers.

They come in a variety of colors including pink, purple, white, yellow, and blue. Each color holds a different meaning; purple asters are a symbol of wisdom, white asters represent innocence, red is a sign of devotion and passion, pink symbolizes love and kindness, and blue asters represent trustworthiness and faithfulness.

Asters have long been used in medicine and cooking. They have also been used to cure a variety of conditions, including headaches and snake bites. Meadow gardens and cottage gardens are also decorated with these colorful flowers.

Fun fact: Asters are sometimes considered the zodiac flower for Capricorns.

September birth flower – Morning Glory

Morning glory, scientifically known as Ipomoea purpurea, is a plant that resembles a trumpet and has five large, flat petals surrounding the flower head. The large, heart-shaped leaves resemble sweet potatoes.

Although morning glory is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of America, it is also found in Asia and Europe.

One of the most well-known pieces of modern art painted by renowned artist Georgia O’Keefe is “Blue Morning Glories,” which she created in 1938.

Morning glory is a symbol of affection, unfulfilled love, and the fleeting beauty of life, which represents mortality.

These dainty, yet visually striking flowers, come in a variety of colors including blue, purple, pink, red, and white with each color representing a unique meaning. Blue represents enduring love, desire, and power, purple symbolizes grace, wealth, and hopefulness, pink is a sign of gratitude and energy, red means passion and strength, and white symbolizes purity and innocence.

For centuries, morning glory has been grown for its decorative qualities. In addition, they are a component of several medications that treat rheumatism, constipation, and headaches.

Fun fact: Morning glory is used in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional Indian healing system, for its medicinal qualities. It is thought to offer sedative and soothing properties that encourage rest and better sleep.
