The month of February has two birth flowers. The primary birth flower is the violet, and the secondary flower is the primrose.

February birth flower – Violet

Violet, scientifically known as Viola, is native to numerous regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and America.

Violets are delicate flowers with heart-shaped petals and striking purple tones. They are well-known for their hue and delightful aroma, and they have long been appreciated for their aesthetic qualities. There are about 500–600 species of violets in the family.

Violets are frequently depicted in religious art as a symbol of modesty and humbleness; for example, in Renaissance paintings, the Virgin Mary is frequently depicted with baby Jesus in her arms, surrounded by purple flowers, symbolizing her modesty.

A violet was a sign of sincerity during the Regency period. Because of this continued kindness, violets today represent modesty, constancy, innocence, and unending love.

As their name implies, many are violet, but there are also blue, yellow, white, and cream varieties. Some even have two colors; usually blue and yellow.

Violets have been used in medicine, fragrances, food preparation, tea, syrup, and various cosmetic products. They are also used to decorate salads and cakes.

Fun fact: Napoleon Bonaparte adored violets and used to wear a necklace containing violets collected by his wife. Later, he declared violets as his signature flower and used them to cover his wife Josephine’s grave when she passed away in 1814.

February birth flower – Primrose

Primrose, scientifically known as Primula vulgaris, is a tiny 10cm-tall perennial woodland plant that produces bundles of colorful flowers. Primrose flowers might be white, yellow, pink, red, or violet, but their centers are usually always yellow.

Native to the Northern Hemisphere, primrose grows in temperate parts of North America, Europe, and Asia.

According to an ancient superstition, primrose has the power to ward off evil spirits. It is also believed to offer love, safety, and protection. Primrose symbolizes youth, new beginnings, beauty, and love.

For generations, primrose has been utilized in traditional medicine. Due to its subtle and distinct flavor, primrose has a long history in European cuisine and is often used to flavor salads, desserts, and drinks. Syrup and wine can also be made from primrose.

Fun fact: Although edible and beneficial for humans, primrose is a poisonous plant for animals.
